well fitness center have not been boarded up. you can see damage left over of a second night of rowdy street protests. san francisco police were out in force last night, trying to rein in the protesters for a second night. demonstrators marched through the streets to the mission police station, throwing paint on the door and a hammer at the officers. one officer received minor injury from the hammer. the protesters damaged two nearby banks, bashing in windows, spraying graffiti, slashing tires of vehicles parked along mission and valencia. last night's demonstration followed thursday night's protests, where one man is recovering in san francisco general hospital. coming back to the live shot, we'll give you a sense of where we are. this is the gym i showed you moment ago. it is across the street and just about half block away from where that officer was injured. that over there is the mission police station. at this point in time, there's no word of any arrests made in

connection with last night's protests. live in san francisco, channel 2news. san francisco police arrested one man, still searching for a second in connection with a recent homicide. officers are looking for this man, 20-year-old dillon lamolly. a $5 million murder warrant has been issued. police say the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. they say he is the second suspect in last sunday's fatal shooting at 25th and treat avenue in the mission district. 18-year-old adrian landers was arrested on thursday. two men are accused of killing a 20-year-old man. in overnight news, two people hurt by stray gunfire during a shootout in oakland overnight. police responded to a report of shots fired at 84th avenue and dowelling street around 11:30 last night. they found cars with windows shot out and two people who had been hit by gunfire in a nearby apartment complex. the victims' injured are not considered life threatening.

police are still looking for the gunman. new this morning, authorities are looking for a driver who went the wrong way on an east bay freeway after a chase. the pursuit began around 2:00 this morning when an officer tried to make a traffic stop on 880 and the driver took off. the chp called off the pursuit after the driver exited the san leandro, then got back on the freeway going the wrong way. the suspect then collided with another vehicle and ran from the scene. the car had minor injuries. two passengers in the car the suspect hit were also injured. investigators believe excessive speed sent a vehicle flying into the front yard of a home in antioch. it happened around 2:00 this morning at a house on delta fair boulevard and kendra street. a driver and two passengers were rushed to john muhr medical center. one person was reportedly air lifted in critical condition. a fourth person in the car ran away. no one in the home was hurt. this morning, san mateo

police are watching for suspicious behavior after an attempted child abduction near parkside elementary school yesterday. the 9-year-old girl was able to get away safely. the suspect is described as a white man in his twenties or thirties with freckles and facial hair. police are looking into whether the incident is connected to a suspicious person who had to be escorted off the campus at horrall elementary. anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the san mateo police department. former chp officer based out of truckie has been arrested. robert holland was taken into custody tuesday afternoon after officers served a search warrant at his home. holland was a 15-year veteran of the force, who left his position the day after his arrest. it is not clear whether he resigned or was fired. . in election news, republican presidential nominee mitt romney is heading from the bay area to

san diego today. last night, he arrived at sfo for a fund-raiser at a private estate in strawberry hill in hillsboro. about 400 people paid between 1000 and $50,000 to attend. donors included hewlett-packard ceo meg whitman and brent jones and his wife. guests told us they think romney's business background is needed in the white house. >> i think he's the perfect guy for our country. we've had a politician in there for many, many years. now it's time to get a businessman in there. >> i've talked to many people that voted for president obama last time around and there are many that are not going to this time. >> not everyone welcomed romney last night. his motorcade passed by a couple dozen protesters holding signs supporting president obama and accusing romney of helping the rich. and yesterday, romney released his 2011 tax returns. he and his wife reported more than $13.5 million in income. they paid 1.9 million in taxes,

for an effective tax rate of 14%. due to most of their earnings coming from capital gains. romney also issued a health report, which states his heart appears to be healthy. he takes baby aspirin and medicine to treat high cholesterol and he is also 6' 1 1/2 and weighs 184 pounds. ann romney is taking a planned break from campaigning this weekend. the campaign says it has nothing to do with her plane making an emergency landing yesterday in denver. an electrical fire in the plane caused minor damage. she has an appearance on the tonight show with jay leno on tuesday. president obama is accusing republicans of leaving washington with a slate of unfinished business. coming up in about 8 minutes, the number of days the house was in session this summer. for the second weekend in a row, one of the main runways at san francisco airport is closed. it shut down so crews can install new runway lights and

make other safety improvements. the work will continue through 8:00 a.m. on monday. travelers are being warned about delays of up to an hour. there will be another round of closures next weekend. a fast-moving wildfire is threatening more than two dozen homes in northern nevada. the cotter springs fire burning along u.s. highway 395 is just 5% contained, but firefighters say winds are pushing the flames to the east, making it less likely the fire will jump the highway and burn homes. one firefighter has been injured. people forced to evacuate a wildfire in chasic county are being allowed to return to their homes this morning. the fire started yesterday afternoon on i-5, about 26 miles north of redding and has burned about 230 acres. it is expected to be fully contained sometime tomorrow. now for a check on the weekend weather, meteorologist rosemary orozco? >> warmer today, and coincidentally, it is the start of fall. 7:49, the official start of the fall season. it's going to be a beautiful

commerce way near santa anita park. we've been told the gunman walked out of the house, got into a ford econoline van and drove away. he's described as african american, 6 feet tall with dread locks and goatee. three colorado movie-goers injured during gunfire at a midnight showing of the dark rises have filed lawsuits, claiming the theater failed to provide adequate security. 24-year-old james holmes faces multiple charges of murder and attempted murder in that case. the owner of the theater where the shooting happened says it will likely reopen early next year. the announcement comes after aurora mayor stephen hogan wrote the ceo of cinemark, saying the community wanted the theater to reopen. >> when something bad happens, you try to make a positive out of it. i think it is a good idea to, you know, have it reopen. >> hogan has also suggested putting up a memorial inside

that theater. a wal-mart security guard was killed in a shooting at a miami area store. the discount chain says the man who was trying to steal undershirts in march gate, florida shot and killed the guard last night. police found the gunman a short time later. he was also found dead from gunshot wound. officers say it appears the man shot himself after running away from the scene. american airlines is apologizing to some of its customers for an increase in delayed and canceled flights. the airline sent e-mails to members of its loyalty program last night, apologizing for the trend. american says the increase in delays is because of a surge in maintenance requests. the company says if flights are delayed more than one hour, it will put you on another flight, another airline, or give you a refund. as of yesterday, american airlines had canceled 310 flights this week alone. new this morning, president obama is taking aim at congress. >> members of the house of representatives banged the gavel, turned out the lights and rushed home, declaring their work finished for now.

if that frustrates you, it should, because their work isn't finished. >> in his weekly address, he criticized republicans for dragging their feet, leaving washington without passing bills to create jobs or protect farmers. house minority leader nancy pelosi says congress was in session only eight days this summer. early this morning, the senate did approve a six-month stop gap spending bill to keep federal agencies running past the november 6th election. the senate also approved a resolution reaffirming the u.s. position against iran's development of nuclear weapons. however, the nonbinding measure does not mean lawmakers have authorized the use of military force or declared war. senators want president obama to continue pressuring tehran with economic sanctions. so far, iran has refused to curb iranian enrichment or to close an underground facility where high grade uranium is stormed. unemployment rates fell across the bay area and in california in august. unemployment in marin county dropped to 6.3%, down from 6.7%

in july. in solano county, the rate dropped to 10%. san francisco's unemployment fell to 7.4%. and statewide, california's unemployment rate dropped to 10.6%. holiday hiring is in full swing. wal-mart plans to hire 50,000 people at stores nationwide to accommodate the holiday shopping rush. the retail chain says it will also give current employees the chance to work extra hours this season. other companies are also adding more workers over the next couple of months. kohl's plans to hire 10% more workers, while target says it's going to hire about 90,000 seasonal workers nationwide. 660 nurses at the santa rosa memorial hospital could soon go on strike. they decided to vote on whether to stage a three-day walkout beginning november 2. a labor dispute has been revolved between a couple of local museums and union workers. the workers have held a series

of demonstrations recently. the contract ended in july. police arrested eight workers earlier this month for blocking entrance to the museum. management says the new agreement, employees will pay part of their healthcare costs, but will also receive a pay raise. apple's new iphone 5 is getting criticism from consumers. the device went on sale yesterday. it has a new mapping, directions and navigations app that replaces the long-time google map system. some iphone users have discovered that some locations in that new mapping system aren't accurate. analysts say consumers will have to give apple time to work out the kinks. >> the map data isn't as good. and i know apple's working really hard on it, but google has had several years of a head start on apple. >> another problem is the new data port and charger cord. it won't work with the old connector system, but some apple fans say they like the iphone 5's faster speed and lighter weight. 10million devices could be sold worldwide this weekend. we could soon learn more about that huge chevron refinery

fire in richmond last month. a community meeting is scheduled for monday night. the fire shut down accrued unit and sent more than 15,000 people to the hospital. representatives from several government agencies are expected to be on hand to answer questions. the meeting is set for 5:15 p.m. at the richmond memorial auditorium. here's a heads-up for drivers in petaluma. south point boulevard will close at 9:00 tonight near the railroad crossing for improvement work. crews will be upgrading the crossing and laying down new track. the roadway is set to be reopened at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. we've all heard the stories about distracted driving among teens, but a new study finds some parents may be influencing their kids behind the wheel in a bad way. the study shows teens who engage in dangerous driving most likely got their bad habits from mom or dad. driving safety experts say even occasionally answering the phone during a drive could influence your teen to do the same. nine out of 10 teens admit to talking on their cell phones while driving. in new jersey, drivers won't be cracking a smile any time

lots near the mexican border. the lots are becoming illegal dumping grounds and being occupied by squatters. officials have begun contacting lot owners, saying they are reliable for any debris. >> where you have either undocumented aliens coming across the border or you have people coming back here for illegal drug activity, you know, you name it, it can happen back here. >> the city is also hosting a cleanup day to try to clear all that trash. a huge dock believed to be ripped away by the japanese tsunami last year was found floating off the shore of hawaii. a pair of fishermen made the discovery about 30 miles north of hannah in maui earlier this week. scientists believe it may be one of four missing docks that broke loose during the tsunami. a dock with similar markings washed up on the oregon coast back in june. and people plan to zumba in vallejo tomorrow to raise money for victims of last month's deadly flooding in the philippines. organizers hope to raise at least $2000 to help with relief efforts after a tropical storm

arrests made in association with last night's second night of protests in the mission district. for now, live in san francisco, christian kafton, ktvu channel 2news. all lanes of highway 9 are back open this morning after a crash that sent a cliff down the cliff in santa clara county, just after 101:15 last night. it went 70 feet down the cliff before stopping. an area ambulance took the driver to stanford hospital. the driver's condition was not released. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. a retired san francisco firefighter who disappeared last week while on a cross-country train trip has been found dead. 69-year-old charlie dowd of san mateo was on his way to emeryville to canada to visit his son. investigators say he may have become disoriented and fallen off the train. a railroad worker found dowd's body in nebraska yesterday. a hiking accident in utah claimed the life of a 74-year-old man from movado. the man was hiking with his

61-year-old wife in zion national park on tuesday. his ankle somehow got trapped in ropes as he was rappeling down. the couple had just received instruction on how to rappel the day before. five members of a south bay family pleaded not guilty on charges they abused more than a dozen people at an unlicensed home care facility. 13 mentally disabled adults were malnourished, beaten and forbidden to use toilet paper. the family ran the home and kept more than 40 dogs on the property as well. they have also been charged with animal abuse. >> does he believe he's not guilty? does he claim he wasn't taking care of those people? >> the reason the plea was entered was in order to proceed to the next step and that's prison. >> the family members are scheduled to appear in court again at the end of the month for preliminary hearing. homeless people have taken over the main occupying

encampment in san francisco. the chronicle reports the camp outside the federal reserve building has been deteriorating for months. even organizers of the occupy movement are considering a change and moving to a different location. at its height there, were dozens of people camping at the site who said they were there to spread the message of economic equality. now, of the 20 or so people still there, only about four identify themselves with the occupy movement. according to the chronicle, the other 15 people at that camp site are homeless people looking for a warm place to sleep. new this morning, hundreds of protesters angry over the killing of the u.s. ambassador to libya stormed the compound of the islamic militia suspected in the attack. protesters set fire to the building in benghazi. no one was killed in that protest. frustration has been growing in libya over armed militias known for their attacks on muslims who do not share their ideology. at least 19 people have been killed in pakistan over the antiislammic film that led to the killing of the u.s.

ambassador. armed demonstrators and a crowd of 15,000 burned two movie theaters and a bank and fired on officers. ads are shown showing president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton denouncing that film. protests are planned across the world today against a controversial drilling process known as fracking. in fracking, water is pumped deep into the ground to crack rocks that contain natural gas. fracking proponents say it increases natural gas production and lowers prices for consumers. opponents say the process contaminates water supplies and destroys the environment. more than 100 cities across the globe are taking part in this protest, including paris, madrid and new york. local environmentalists will hold what they call a don't frack our bay rally today. they will meet at crissey field at 10:00 this morning. the group claims fracking operations in the sacramento valley and delta are threatening the water quality in san francisco bay. endeavour is a solo act this morning, with a lift from a

boeing 747, the space shuttle yesterday gave people across the bay area and california images they will not soon forget. we've been told the crews have removed endeavour from atop the jumbo jet. this is a live picture of endeavour at lax. the separation process happened much quicker than originally planned. it was expected to be finished by late this morning. endeavour will be taken to an airport hangar before rolling out to its permanent home at the california science center next month. thousands of people across the bay area took up prime spots to watch endeavour's final journey in the air. there were breathtaking images of endeavour soaring above the golden gate bridge and all over the bay area. the historic flight drew applause and appreciation, a great sense of pride at the nasa aims center in mountain view who worked on the space shuttle. >> flying over the research center to pay tribute to the research center -- choking me up. >> researchers at nasa aims worked on projects including

endeavour's heat shields, pilot training and wind tunnel tests. endeavour's victory lap across the state had some californians thinking about the possibility of traveling in space. coming up in 9 minutes, the boost california is giving to the state's space travel industry. and we posted photos taken by ktvu viewers of the fly-over. check our weekend for more. three people in custody this morning, accused of a string of burglaries on the peninsula. some attentive neighbors reported yesterday seeing the suspects appearing to case the homes on the 300 block of chesterton avenue in belmont. police tracked down the suspects and arrested them. they are identified as 27-year-old everhart and two male teenagers, ages 15 and 16. investigators say they have connected the trio to at least one burglary in belmont two, in san mateo and at least three in unincorporated san mateo county. this morning, police are looking for the thieves who stole the wiring that powers the lights and scoreboard at a football field for hayward high school. officials say the hayward football team plays all its home

staffers have opened new offices in oakland and san francisco. mayor ed lee helped kickoff the organize for america office on san francisco's market street. volunteers wasted no time in getting to work. they started making phone calls to swing states even before the office officially opened yesterday afternoon. less than two months away from the november election and according to the secretary of state's office, more than 17 million californians are registered to vote. out of those, more than one in five have not chosen a party preference. republican registrations continue to decline across the state, with about 30% of voters. if you still haven't registered, you have until october 22nd to do so. state launched its first online voter registration program earlier this week. palo alto voters may soon have their say on a project that would turn the area near the university avenue cal trans station into an arts and innovation district. the mercury news says voters could be asked to weigh in on the project as soon as next march. the plans call for office buildings, performing arts center and underground garage and relocating the intermodal transit center. the project would also improve

two victims were taken to the hospital. no one in the home was hurt. also new this morning, authorities are searching for a driver who went the wrong way on an east bay freeway after a chase and collided with another car. chp says the pursuit began around 2:00 this morning, when an officer tried to make a traffic stop on 880 and the driver took off. chp called off the pursuit after the driver exited in san leandro, then got back on the freeway going the wrong direction. the suspect collided with another vehicle and ran from the scene. passenger in the suspect's car has mile-an-hour injuries. two passengers in the other car were also injured. several businesses in san francisco's mission district have a big mess to clean up this morning. for a second straight night, people protesting a police shooting vandalized businesses, including some banks. demonstrators busted up atms and smattered windows of banks and a fitness club, also sprayed graffiti and slashed tires of cars parked long the street. protesters were angry over a police shooting that happened thursday night.

an officer says he shot the suspect twice after the suspect pulled out a gun. at 8:30, we'll have a live report on the damage caused by another night of protesting. san francisco police have arrested one man, but are still searching for a second in connection with the recent homicide. officers are looking for this man, 20-year-old dillon la molly. a $5 million murder warrant has been issued for him. police say la molly should be considered armed and dangerous. they say he is the second suspect in last sunday's fatal shooting at 25th street and treat avenue in the mission district. on thursday, police arrested 18-year-old adrian landers. the two men are accused of killing jesus soliz, 20 years old. two people were hurt by stray gunfire during a shootout in oakland overnight. police say they responded to a call of shots fired around 101:30 last night. when they arrived, they found cars with windows shot out and two people who had been hit by stray gunfire in a nearby apartment complex. the victims' injuries are not considered life threatening. police are still looking for the

shooters. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information on the brazen killing of a man in oakland. it happened just before 7:00 last night. police say the 34-year-old man was shot inside a home on commerce way near santa anita park. we've been told the gunman then walked out of the house, got into a ford econoline van and drove away. sedescribed as african american, 6 feet tall with dread locks and goatee. this morning, san mateo police are asking the public to watch out for suspicious behavior after an attempted child abduction near an elementary school. investigators say someone tried to abduct a 9-year-old girl at parkside elementary school yesterday afternoon. the girl was able to get away safely. the suspect is described as a white man in his twenties or thirties, 6 feet tall, with freckles and facial hair. police are looking into whether that incident is connected to a suspicious person who had to be escorted off campus at horrall elementary. police are investigating reports that a strange offered alcohol to students from bayside stem academy. anyone with information on any of the incidents is asked to

skies, low 60s in the forecast. there's no relief in sight for firefighters battling several large wildfires in central washington state. thunderstorms are in the forecast today and firefighters are concerned lightning could spark even more fires. firefighters are also worried the 47 square-mile table mountain fire could merge with another large fire burning southwest of wenatchee. a fast-moving wildfire is threatening more than two dozen homes in northern nevada. the carter springs fire along u.s. highway 395, south of gardnerville is just 5% contained. firefighters say winds are pushing the flames to the east, making it less likely the fire will jump the highway and burn more homes. one firefighter has been injured in that blaze. and people were forced to evacuate because of a wildfire in shasta county, now being allowed to return back to their homes this morning. the fire started yesterday morning and has burned about 230 acres west of redding. it is expected to be fully contained sometime tomorrow. no immediate reports of

pay raise. american airlines is apologizing to some of its customers for an increase in delayed and canceled flights. the airline sent e-mails to members of its loyalty program last night, apologizing for the trend. american airlines says the increase in delays is because of a surge in maintenance requests. the company says if a flight is delayed more than one hour, it will put you on another flight, another airline, or give you a refund. as of yesterday, american airlines had canceled 310 flights this week alone. apple's new iphone 5 is getting the criticism from new owners. the device came out yesterday. it has a new mapping, directions and navigation app, replacing the long-time google maps system. some iphone users discovered that some locations in the new mapping system are not accurate. analysts say consumers will have to give apple time to work out all those kinks. >> the map data isn't as good. i know apple is working really hard on it, but google has had several years of a head start on apple. >> another problem is the new data port and charger cord. it will not work with the old connector system, but some apple

. a huge dock believed to have been ripped away by the japanese tsunami was found floating off the shore of hawaii. a pair of fishermen made the discovery 30 miles north of hannah in maui earlier this week. scientists believe it may be one of four missing docks that broke loose during the tsunami. a dock with a similar markings washed up on the oregon coast back in june. protests are planned across the world today against a controversial drilling process known as fracking. in fracking, water is pumped deep into the ground to crack rocks that contain natural gas. fracking proponents say it increases natural gas production and lowers prices for consumers.

the city of san francisco is cracking down on the lot that are vacant. the city has contacting the owners of those lots telling them that they are liable for the debris. the city is also hosting a cleanup day to try to clear autopsy the -- all of the trash. three injured in the shootings in the aurora, colorado shootings are suing the theater. james holmes faces multiple charges of murder and attempted murder in the case. the owner of the theater says it will likely reopen early next year. the announcement comes after steven hogan said the community wants the theater to reopen.
